Dr Stephen (Steve) Muhi (he/him) is an Infectious Diseases and General Medicine Consultant Physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), a graduate researcher in the Stinear Laboratory at the Doherty Institute, a Medical Education Consultant at the WHO-CC for Antimicrobial Resistance, and has teaching appointments at the University of Melbourne's RMH Clinical School. Steve has a range of interests, particularly Buruli ulcer and other neglected tropical diseases, and travel medicine.

Key Achievements
-
Dr Muhi has completed dual undergraduate degrees (BSc, BMedSc) majoring in physics, biochemistry and molecular biology, and completed graduate medicine (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS) in 2012. He then completed a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPHTM) in 2016 and a Master of Clinical Education (MClinEd) in 2019. He has been recognised as a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (FACTM) and Faculty of Travel Medicine (FFTM) and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). He holds an NHMRC postgraduate scholarship and is on track to complete his PhD research in 2024.

Howden Group
Research from Professor Ben Howden’s group uses genomics, molecular biology, epidemiology and clinical studies to address a broad range of issues related to invasive bacterial diseases in humans, especially those caused by staphylococci, enterococci and other antimicrobial-resistant species. Additionally, working closely with scientists in the MDU PHL, they investigate the epidemiology, evolution and spread of bacterial pathogens of public health significance such as Neisseria gonorrhoea, Listeria monocytogenes, Shigella and Salmonella spp., Legionella spp., and carbapenemase-producing gram-negative bacteria.

Stinear Group
Tim Stinear’s group’s research addresses priorities across four connected themes that including hospital superbugs, pathogenic mycobacteria, natural product discovery and public health genomics that aim to understand and contain the spread of bacteria causing serious human disease.
