Dr Ricardo Ataide has a PhD in Applied Biology. Ricardo conducted his PhD with Prof Stephen Rogerson at the University of Melbourne in 2011 and has a wealth of experience in assay development, malaria serology, placental pathology, and pregnancy. For the past two years, Ricardo has been running several studies of iron interventions to combat anaemia in children and pregnancy led by Dr Sant-Rayn Pasricha (WEHI) in Malawi, including the IRMA and REVAMP RCTs. Ricardo also leads efforts to use samples from these trials to evaluate mechanisms regulating placental immunology and newborn health.

Dr Ricardo Ataide has extensive experience in all aspects of malaria research, having worked on the mosquito, liver and blood stages of the disease, and in murine and human malaria studies. His phagocytosis assay – to determine the presence of opsonizing antibodies against malaria – has uncovered several important functional aspects of the immune response to malaria. Ricardo’s work on P. vivax malaria during pregnancy, and its effects on placenta pathology helped cement this pathogen as a maternal and foetal health risk. His focus on placental pathology led to the first in-situ studies of immune gene expression of malaria-infected placentas.
