Dr Dixon is a Senior Research Fellow in the McCarthy group in the Department of Infectious Diseases, at the Doherty Institute. His research investigates how the sexual stages of the malaria parasite develop and how modulating this biology controls disease transmission. His work has a particular focus on understanding parasite architecture and the biology underpinning transcriptional and translational control of core developmental checkpoints in parasite development and transmission. His research uses a combination of techniques including CRISPR gene editing, proteomics, transcriptomics, molecular and cellular biology techniques and super resolution microscopy to understanding the unique biology controlling malaria transmission.

  • Key Achievements
    • Dr Dixon is an experienced molecular and cell biologist with more than 15 years experience working in malaria biology. He has made seminal contributions to our understanding of P. falciparum gametocyte architecture, physiology, and host cell remodelling. His exceptional work has been published in top ranked journals such the Nature Communications (x4) and PNAS (x2). He has 62 publications in total and a h-index of 36. He has supervised 9 PhD and 14 masters/honours level student to completion. He has held and successfully completed ARC & NHMRC grants and fellowship and philanthropic grants, including a Ramaciotti Foundation Grant.
