Doherty Institute staff excel at ASM Awards presentation
Congratulations to the Doherty Institute staff who were presented with 2016 Australian Society for Microbiology Awards at the Annual Scientific Meeting held in Perth.
ASM Jim Pittard Early Career Award
Dr Jaclyn Pearson (Hartland Laboratory, Dept of Microbiology & Immunology) was the inaugural winner of this award and presented the Jim Pittard lecture at the ASM Annual Scientific meeting. The ASM Jim Pittard Early Career Award, which recognises distinguished contributions in an area of Australian research in microbiology by scientists in early stages of their career, was named in honour of Emeritus Professor Jim Pittard, distinguished microbial geneticist, former Head of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Melbourne.
"I am extremely honoured to be the inaugural winner of the Jim Pittard award, as Jim himself has been a very influential and inspiring scientific leader in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. It is a fantastic initiative that the ASM have decided to support as it provides outstanding early career researchers with recognition and an opportunity to present their research in a plenary session with many attendees. Personally I was very pleased to receive such a fantastic award form a long standing Microbiology Society and in the city I was originally form," Dr Pearson said.
ASM David White Excellence in Teaching Award
Helen Cain, a teaching academic from the Department of Microbiology & Immunology was awarded the 2016 ASM David White Excellence in Teaching Award, named in honour of Professor David White, former Head of the department of Microbiology & Immunology who was a passionate educator, particularly in the area of undergraduate teaching. The award recognises excellence in the teaching of microbiology in Australia.
ASM Distinguished Service Award
Sue Coloe, scientist in VIDRL, received an ASM Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service by an individual to the Australian Society for Microbiology at the ASM Annual Scientific meeting.
BD ASM Student Travel Award
Joshua Newson, PhD candidate in the Hartland laboratory in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, gave a presentation at the ASM Annual Scientifc meeting on his current research towards his PhD as the Victorian winner of the BD ASM Student Travel Award.
