Doherty Institute researchers named as Highly Cited Researchers for 2024

As a global leader in infection and immunity, the Doherty Institute is proud to be home to 11 researchers named on the list of Highly Cited Researchers 2024. This prestigious recognition underscores their outstanding contributions to science and the impact of their world-leading research. 

Compiled annually by Clarivate, the list identifies researchers whose publications are among the top one per cent most cited in their fields globally.  

The University of Melbourne’s Professor Paul Gorry, Deputy Director of the Doherty Institute, congratulated the researchers on the recognition. 

"This achievement highlights the high calibre of research at the Doherty Institute. It reflects not only individual dedication but also the collaborative environment that fosters impactful science,” said Professor Gorry. 

This year’s list includes more than 6,600 individual researchers from 59 countries.  Australia ranks fifth globally with 313 scientists on the list, following the United States, Mainland China, the UK and Germany.

Dr Adam Wheatley, Laboratory Head, specialising in B cell immunology

Professor Axel Kallies, Laboratory Head, studying T cells in chronic diseases like infections and cancer

Dr Claire Gorrie, Senior Bioinformatician, investigating antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in hospitals 

Professor Kanta Subbarao, Professorial Fellow, international expert on the biology, pathogenesis and vaccines for emerging viral diseases of global importance

Professor Katherine Kedzierska, Head of the Human T cell Laboratory, recognised for her leading research on T cell immunity to viral infections

Professor Laura Mackay, Laboratory Head and Immunology Theme Leader, at the forefront of research into tissue-resident memory T cells

Dr Ryan Wick, Bioinformatics Research Fellow, developing cutting-edge computational tools for bacterial genomics

Professor Sharon Lewin, Director of the Doherty Institute and a Melbourne Laureate Professor, global leader in HIV research

Professor Stephen Kent, Laboratory Head, leading vaccine research and immunology of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza and HIV

Professor Thomas Gebhardt, Laboratory Head, focusing innate and adaptive immune responses in lymphoid and peripheral tissues
